Gallery 1 - Native artifacts, early subsistence and commercial fishing, seining, gillnetting, Leschi wheel, longlining, crabbing and clamming.
These two sketches were made by Susan and colored by Denis. They are the first renderings of ideas for Gallery 1, walls B, E, F and A. Just like the layout of objects, colors are suggestions.
The gut parka is located at the corner of walls A & F. The panel with hunting and fishing ends at point where Wall A meets the Entry hallway. The bow rollers are mounted on the side of the FV Kee exhibit. The video screen shows net being fed out off the stern of the boat and then being reeled in, with and without fish. Also, lots of photos of gillnetting on the flats and in the Sound, maybe an interview with an old timer, information about the evolution of boats over the past 100 years or so. Round beach rocks are under the canoe. Note the rounded corner to the left of the boats. That wall has large graphics of old art or old photos
Wall B features two cabinets with more artifacts on display and drawers with more more artifacts that can be pulled out for viewing. Seining display shows old seine stuff, much of which is on display now, photograph by Milo Burcham of modern seiner in a set (see cover of current Cordova phonebook). A large magnetic chart of the Sound gives a look at the fishing grounds. Being magnetic allows graphics to be changed readily
